Spam Protection
I have often wondered what the best thing for spam protection, comment wise is. Most blogging platforms offer at least one plugin that allows users to prevent spam comments. WordPress comes packaged with the Akismet plugin, but there are other plugins as well, including captcha plugins. However, I’ve been told more than once that captcha plugins are annoying and actually turn visitors away from commenting on your site. So my question is, what do you use on your blog for spam protection?
I used to use a captcha plugin, but after being told several times that it was annoying and was detracting from my commentors, I switched to Akismet. So far it works very well, although I’ve heard of bloggers who didn’t get nearly the results in keeping spam comments out. Of course, I not only use Akismet, but my comments are moderated as well. So I make doubly sure that spam comments don’t get through.
I just thought it would be helpful to myself and possibly others to find out how others handle their spam problems.

Hey there! Neat layout. I like the colours! Hmm, yeah I don’t really have a problem with spam *knocks on wood* so I haven’t had to use anything yet. I’d say captcha seem the best way to go, but you have mentioned that brings problems. I’ve also seen people lately using this add x + x. Maybe that? I don’t know. Anyways, take care! Hope you can sort it out!

I’m new to wordpress so Akismet + moderated comments works for me, because Akismet alone can’t take the spam out. I have visited blogs with captcha so I can say that is better as a text (like submit 2 + 10) than as an image.

Akismet plus Spam Karma 2 keeps my site spam-free.
The only problem with CAPTCHAS, is you have NO option to retrieve your comment other than a good browser that caches every page including input fields. If you’re in IE, your comment is gone, and it’s the most frustrating thing in the world, especially when you’re one of those people who comments on everything.
Moderating comments is still a little annoying, but not that bad. It kinda kills the conversation that can happen in comments (commentators responding to other commentators) if you’re not online more than once a day.
