Life Experience in Pop Music

You know, one of the things that I find interesting about pop music is that while some of the songs may be based on life experience, the greater majority of songs are not. Granted, many of today’s pop music artists are teenagers, whose life experience can be counted on one hand – if they don’t sing about their parents’ divorce, then they’d have to be singing about a boyfriend/girlfriend or finding the right acne treatments for them. So in a way, I suppose it is a good thing you don’t find Miley Cyrus singing songs based too much on her life.

However, one pop star does do a lot of “life experience” songs – Mariah Carey. Her album E=MC2 is a perfect example of this. Listening to “Side Effects” and “I Wish You Well” make you think that she is either singing about ex-husband Tommy Mottola, or one heck of an ex-boyfriend. In any case, since she writes her own songs (except the occasional ballad she snags from Def Leppard, lol) one can only assume she must be writing those songs from personal experience.

Do you find the lack of songs based on personal experience in pop music (or any genre really) refreshing because it allows you to make that “escape” or do you like to hear songs based on personal experience?
