Good for Susan Boyle

In case you’ve been living under an internet rock and haven’t heard, a 47-year old single woman from Scotland who lives alone with her cat, has blown even Simon Cowell out of the water on “Britain’s Got Talent.” I say good for her! You see, one of the things that makes me angrier than anything is that in order to be a singer you have to “look the part” if you’re a woman. Meaning you have to be thin, preferably blond but brunette works as well, great skin, pretty face, sexy body. You can’t be fat, frumpy, have bad hair, bad skin, bad teeth, or anything else that the media labels ugly or unflattering.

Showbiz requires that you be perfect looking in order to get by. Sure, you see those Pro-Activ commercials with the various gorgeous celebrities talking about how they have acne, and how they have had such problems with it, and how the Pro-Activ fixed their problems so they didn’t have to worry anymore. Yeah, worry that Hollywood would realize they weren’t perfect in the looks department and kick them to the curb.

Just because a person is fat, has more hair than is considered appropriate (I personally have enough hair for about 3 people besides me when it’s long), has acne, etc does not mean they don’t have talent. In fact, some of us probably have more talent than the actual stars. For example – I’ve been singing for years and even had friends who tried to convince me to try out for American Idol when I lived in Texas. I didn’t, because a) I didn’t want to hear Simon bitch that I’m too fat, and b) at the time, you had to be 24 or under and I was 25. However, there’s a guy I used to work with who HAS tried out for AI several times, has gotten call backs for it before, and when he heard me sing at a talent competition at work, he was blown away. He hadn’t known I could sing. LOL The last time he’d heard me sing, I was in a group and couldn’t be heard. This time I was alone and I could be heard. )

I sing a lot at work – namely because a guy in my bay has a habit of bursting out into song for no reason when we’re slow and he’s between calls. He’ll sing anything – Beyonce, Destiny’s Child, Madonna, Weird Al, you name it, he’ll sing it. It’s hilarious. ) He even dances, which is really funny. And he has a GREAT voice. But you know what? You’d NEVER see him in Hollywood because he doesn’t look the part.

So I say good for Susan Boyle. She’s proving that just because you don’t LOOK the part, doesn’t mean you don’t have the talent and don’t have what it takes to BE WHAT YOU WANT!
