My So-Called Life
Generic

I’m curious as to how my readers, what few of you there are, feel about generic products. I’m talking about store brands of items. For example, buy Family Dollar brand dandruff shampoo instead of Head and Shoulders, or buying the “Panburger Partner” instead of “Hamburger Helper.” My ex-roommate was strongly against getting the store brand ANYTHING. She had a fit if I suggested it when we lived together. Of course, it was fine when we were grocery shopping for stuff for my apartment and she wouldn’t be eating/using it.
Now with that said, there are some things that I won’t buy generic of. Certain of the bagged skillet meals that you get in the freezer section have to be name brand or I won’t buy them. Hamburger Helper? If there’s a store brand for the flavor I want, I’ll get it. But if it’s canned pastas like Chef Boyardee, it HAS to be the real stuff. The store brands never taste right.
But for most things, the store brand is perfectly fine for me. I see no reason to pay more for something simply because it’s the “real thing” if there’s a substitute right there for cheaper. Then again, it could be that I’m just cheap because I’m broke.
