Cutting Hours

Seems like everywhere I look, I’m reading blogs about hours being cut where people work. They’re doing where I work too, although not in the way others are seeing. Where I work, Alorica, is cutting out their overnight shift. There hasn’t been any official word on why, but the buzz is not enough calls coming in on the overnight shift to make it work AT&T paying us to be on the phones. I wasn’t looking for an overnight shift anyways, so I guess it doesn’t matter to me.
But I know there are a lot of people who are getting their actual number of hours per week they work cut and that’s just so not good. It can come to a point where those people are either forced to find secondary means of employment or even attempt to find a new job where they will get the number of hours they need.
The call center above ours, MPC, recently announced they were laying off the entire staff at that center. Buzz at Alorica was that it was a building lease issue, but the news stated it was actually some sort of bankruptcy thing and that a call center in Idaho was also being shut down and everyone laid off. I think it’s completely sad when companies have to do things like that.
I mean, I understand that if the companies aren’t making money they can’t run the business, but at the same time, it puts so many others into the job market making it near to impossible in some places to get jobs.
My heart goes out to those of you out there who have experienced hour cuts or lay offs due to the current economic situation.
