Broken Equipment?

Well, I ran out for a bit today to pay a bill and then grab a couple things at the grocery store. First up I went to pay the storage unit for the next month’s rent on the unit. That went fine until the gal behind the counter thought that the receipt printer had broken, because it wouldn’t spit out the receipt for my debit card charge. It finally did though, it was just being a slow poke about it. )

But it made me think about how much we rely on these electronic devices to get us through our day. If the receipt printer stops working or the debit/credit card machine stops working, some businesses would be completely and totally in a bind. Not to mention places like Walmart which are totally messed up if something like that happens, because usually it means the entire system is down – meaning all of the registers are locked up and can’t be used. Fun fun.

So what happens if a business that runs everything via computer or electronic device has that equipment break down? Do they shut down for the day or do they keep track via pen and paper until they can get the equipment working again?
